Volunteers Deliver Wooden Bookcases to Families in New York City

Pablo Alfonso Rodríguez got up early this Saturday to collect wooden bookcases to be delivered to families so they could have their own collection of books and access to reading.

Like him, dozens of volunteers gave their time for a good cause.

“Of course it makes me feel good, that it adds something positive and I believe that I will give a good example to others.”Or, because it’s something that I always put on social media as well and other people get inspired and I think that someone is interested, he would also be interested in being a part of take in doing something like that. “That’s why I don’t do it,” explained Rodríguez.

State Assemblyman Harvey Epstein is a sponsor of this project, which aims to improve and beautify parks and playgrounds in NYCHA housing complexes in New York’s low-income neighborhoods. They started with this one located at 750 East 6th Street in Manhattan.

“It is our families, it is the most important place for sons and daughters, many families live here in NYCHA, and it is important to help these families with projects, with books, with gardening, and there are services here too,” says Epstein.

He said that these recreational facilities are essential for the physical and mental development of children.

Ana Orellana, of the NYCHA Residents Association, LESII continues:

“Because we also want to let them know that they have value too and that’s what’s important too. They are the children here who are being raised, they are children who also through their parents work hard like all these people, regardless of the economy they come from, but the children who they also need to get something, just as it is of quality. .

Likewise, they have the idea of planting plants, with the purpose of teaching and encouraging children and other residents of the area about the importance of nature and how green areas provide life for the planet and the communities.

During this day of activity, volunteers painted the walls of the basketball court.

“I think it is something important because access to green areas of nature is a human right for everyone and makes you grow up in a beautiful world, right? Because when you see a beautiful world, you feel that there are more opportunities for positive emotions, it makes you feel good and that changes your thinking and even your lifestyle changes,’ said Rodriguez Fernández.

The goal of the organizers is to bring this project to other communities throughout New York City, where NYCHA housing is located.
