Volunteer Cyriel Haggenburg passed away

Utrechter Haggenburg, whose cradle was in Oog in Al, fulfilled his duties as a volunteer at FC Utrecht with great pleasure. It was certainly no secret that he enjoyed it: adorned with an infectious smile, he could be found many hours a week at the Zoudenbalch Sports Complex and Galgenwaard Stadium. Haggenburg, who lives in Overvecht, liked to chat with the people he met – often about his beloved FC Utrecht.

At the beginning of this century, Haggenburg made his debut as a volunteer at FC Utrecht as a youth referee. In the years that followed, he took on numerous activities, especially at Zoudenbalch. As he said himself in an interview he gave to In De Buurt in 2021: “From making sandwiches to doing the laundry, I have done everything at the club. Except in the first game.”

But Haggenburg also had a role around the first team matches. For a while he took care of the ball boys around the matches in Galgenwaard Stadium. And at Sports Complex Zoudenbalch his voice often sounded through the speakers: being a ringmaster; Haggenburg could do that too. In recent years, the boardroom of FC Utrecht’s youth accommodation has been, as it were, his second living room. Whoever came to visit the Koningsweg, could always count on a warm welcome at Haggenburg, a chat about football and a nice cup of coffee or tea of course.

Haggenburg also enjoyed the Sinterklaas evenings that he organized for the youngest youth players of FC Utrecht. As early as April he started preparing for those meetings, which were always greatly appreciated by all those present. That’s what Haggenburg did it for in turn.

A minute’s silence will be held this week before the matches of the FC Utrecht youth teams. The players of the youth teams of the Utrecht FC also wear mourning bands. Tonight (Monday), prior to Jong FC Utrecht – Willem II in Galgenwaard Stadium, the death of Haggenburg will also be commemorated, which will also be paid attention to on Sunday when FC Utrecht plays against Go Ahead Eagles.

FC Utrecht wishes the relatives of Haggenburg much strength and strength.
