Volleyball Comeback: Coach Jannis Athanasopulos on Returning to the Hall and Overcoming Challenges

Coach Jannis Athanasopulos said that volleyball is like riding a bike and you never forget. Did you have the same feeling when you returned to the hall?

I had respect, I didn’t even know if I would get shortlisted and go to Europe. The first two weeks were pretty brutal for my knees and achilles. But now it’s getting better and better. I know I can do better, but I’m pleasantly surprised at how well I fit in.

Has the team changed a lot since you played on the sand?

There are girls fifteen or more years younger. Nobody here is over thirty, I’m hardly there. (smile) I was a little scared, but I’m glad that I can play with them and give them some of my experience.

The cooperation between Helena Havelková (left), Markéta Nausch Sluková and coach Simon Nausch did not last.

How do you look back on the beach stage alongside Markéta Nausch-Sluková? Do you take it as a mistake or an experience? The dream of the Olympics did not come true, the end came during the season.

It certainly wasn’t a mistake. I wanted to try it on the sand, I went through it and found out that it was impossible. So I’m back.

When did you find out that continuing on the sand has no future?

Probably over time, it wasn’t overnight. I felt it was unrealistic and I quit.

What did you struggle with the most?

The sport is completely different, and I’ve always been more of a six-ball player than a beach player. And everyday life is also different. I tried to adapt, to do my best… And I just ended it.

Where will you be playing at club level now?

From the beginning, I didn’t know if I would be up to it and if I would physically be able to return to six-person volleyball. Now I see that I can play, and I’m deciding what to do next. It’s late, a lot of clubs have signed, but I have some negotiations and now we still have a month ahead of us with the midfielder.

In it you will have the unusual number 61.

I’ve had sixteen all my life, so I chose 88, which is my year, it’s sixteen in total. I played some games with it, but when I found out what it meant (short for greeting in neo-Nazi symbolism), I went back to the inverted sixteen.
