The German car manufacturer Volkswagen is gradually preparing to show its upcoming ID.7 sedan, which can be called an electric alternative to the Passat, but the car manufacturer has announced some other news even before that, namely that the models of the ID family will receive a new, more powerful and also more efficient electric motor.
If in the world of internal combustion engines it is customary to talk about new engines that have received various improvements and changes, then in the context of electric cars this has been relatively rare until now. The new electric motor received the factory designation “APP550” and it is said to have been developed completely from scratch. According to the manufacturer’s representatives, this means more power and more distance on a single charge.
This electric motor is designed to be placed on the rear axle and it will not take up more space than the currently used electric motors, but it will be significantly more powerful – it will develop 281 horsepower and a maximum torque of 550Nm. For comparison, the currently used electric motor on the rear axle develops 201 horsepower and 310Nm. In this case, we are talking about self-excited synchronous motors. Volkswagen emphasizes that it will provide smoother, better power delivery both when accelerating from a standstill and when driving.
More torque has been achieved thanks to improvements in the stator, which now has more turns, while the magnet placed in the rotor has been made more powerful and better able to cope with heavy loads. The entire powertrain is generally made more robust to handle more torque. It is also worth mentioning the optimized thermal management system. This engine is cooled by an energy-saving system that does not use an electric oil pump. The electric motor cools itself independently, using specially designed components to supply it with oil, which is then cooled by the machine’s overall cooling system.
The car manufacturer has revealed that the first cars with the new electric motor are planned to be delivered at the end of this year, but it has not yet been confirmed in which model the new electric motor will arrive first.
