Volkswagen is close to a historic decision. It will change the face of its range forever by cutting production of this iconic model
It is undeniable that these are crucial years for all the major automotive giants. Years of passage from the old paradigm of the combustion engine to the electric one of the green revolution. The period is delicate for everyone, and the fierce Chinese competition is also complicating things.
The leap towards a new car concept is turning the entire industry upside down deal with new production platforms and new processesreinventing itself in segments that were little explored until a few years ago.
Which is also a good thing, who knows, who knows, something truly unique might emerge on the market from this shuffling of cards. What is certain is that most manufacturers are downsizing their vehicle ranges to adapt to the needs of a public that has changed together with the advent of new electric vehicle technologies.
Rethink production and models
Changing sales targets also means rethink the models that have made the history of automotive brands. One of those that is questioning its old glories is the house of Wolfsburg. Although he recently announced the release of the Golf 9which for the first time will be electric only, there is another model which instead risks being sacrificed forever.
With the future release of the Golf 9 on the market we will begin to question the choices on which Volkswagen initially oriented itself for the launch of its electric range: the ID. Now that a few years have already passed since the beginning of the era full electric, something among its products could create a short circuit in salesor rather, it could give rise to a process of cannibalization among the proposals of the same house. Which would in turn lead to some confusion among customers.

Goodbye Polo, there will be no room for an electric one in the same segment beyond the ID1 and ID2
So Volkswagen is considering, albeit reluctantly, the elimination of one of its iconic models before 2030. This is supported by sources from the Financial Times, according to which the Polo, VW’s second best-selling car worldwide, is now in the balance. The current generation should last until 2026, but its future is uncertain. As mentioned, the risk involved in maintaining the production of the Polo in parallel with that of the ID1 and ID2 is that of overlapping the vehicles in the same segment. That is, they would have a similar market.
This change of direction on the product however, it could have a profound organizational impact on workers in Brazil, China and South Africa. Also complicating matters is the tightening of emissions standards which is influencing the discussion on the immediate future of the Polo. Future even more uncertain in the United Kingdomwhere the government announced a ban on selling new petrol and diesel cars from 2030, ahead of the equivalent EU ban in 2035.
