Volkswagen will have to compensate the Italians, 3,300 euros each

Altroconsumo, which has been fighting for the protection of citizens’ rights for years, had initiated the class action in 2017. Right at the dawn of the “Dieselgate” scandal. To join that class action, over 63 thousand Italian consumers, who will now be compensated.

For the “Dieselgate” case, however, not only Italy had moved, but also Altroconsumo’s counterparts in Belgium, Spain and Portugal. Consumer protection associations had come together in a network and now Volkswagen will have to pay around 200 million euros in total.

Citizens were recognized for pecuniary and non-pecuniary damage. Altroconsumo will contact them in the next few days to explain the procedures through which to adhere to the compensation. Volkswagen will have to compensate the 63 thousand Italians with 3,300 euros each.

Interest to each admitted member must be added to this sum. This is 50% for those who bought a used car or resold the car between August 2009 and September 2015. Finally, Volkswagen will have to reimburse consumers for legal and advertising costs.
