The plant, whose construction requires the approval of Volkswagen’s supervisory board in the coming weeks, is part of the Trinity group’s project, in which the carmaker will manufacture a fragship car in Wolfsburg from 2026.
Volkswagen, which did not provide an estimate of the cost of the plant, said it was considering a 10-hour production time for a Trinity vehicle, similar to the time it took Tesla to assemble the Model 3 car at the Gruenheide plant.
Building a completely new plant is an alternative to adapting the existing factory in Wolfsburg to produce the Trinity model, which VW says would limit the possibility of more radical changes to the production process.
“That’s why we are planning the new construction: efficient and unrestricted because of the existing structures,” Volkswagen CEO Ralf Brandstaetter said in a statement.
“This way we gain time and space to gradually modernize the main factory to increase production there, to a new level.”
Volkswagen’s Trinity model aims for a level 4 range of autonomy, in which the car can cope with all aspects of driving in most circumstances without human intervention.
Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess compared Wolfsburg to the German Tesla plant, which is set to open later this year or early next year, arguing that VW’s main plant is far behind in terms of efficiency and speed. .
This helped escalate a conflict between Diess and employee representatives, who accused the director of spreading fear, warning of major job cuts that would lead to a shift to more efficient and faster production. Also Tuesday, Diess said there were no plans for mass layoffs.
