Volkswagen wants to beat Tesla and be the number one in the electric car market within four years

The German carmaker, which recently unveiled its strategy, expects battery-powered cars to account for half of Volkswagen’s worldwide sales by 2030.

Before that happens, it will try to overtake Tesla in electric car sales by 2025, despite the fact that in 2020 these cars accounted for only three percent of the carmaker’s global sales. The group sold a total of 9.2 million cars last year.

“We have set ourselves the strategic goal of becoming a leader in the global electric vehicle market – and we are well on our way. We are now setting the parameters, “said Herbert Diess, CEO of the VW Group.

Last month, Volkswagen said it would stop selling internal combustion engine cars in Europe by 2035 and later in China and the United States as part of the transition to electric cars. The same end date for the sale of internal combustion engines was outlined by the European Commission in Wednesday’s proposal.

The group aims to ensure that most of its vehicles have zero emissions in all major markets by 2040, while aiming to be climate neutral by 2050.

A single, cross-class electrical platform should contribute to this. It will also phase out cars on internal combustion platforms over the next decade, and the company’s only electric platform, the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), is set to make its debut as the basis for the successor to the Audi A8, to be launched in 2026.

The German group also invests heavily in batteries. It will introduce a uniform article design that will reduce costs by 50 percent. This type of battery cell will be manufactured in six factories throughout Europe.
