Volkswagen Unveils ID Concept at Beijing Auto Show – Future Design Direction Revealed

At the Beijing Auto Show, Volkswagen has presented the ID concept. Code, which makes it clear in which direction the German car company’s design team is heading.

id. The technical characteristics of the Code are not disclosed – the car will not go on the assembly line anyway, because the task is to describe the image that we can expect from Volkswagen in the coming years.

id. The Code has a coupe-like body with muscular wheel arches, video cameras instead of side mirrors, and touch surfaces that replace door handles. The package includes a black glass roof, 24-inch wheels, horizontal headlights with direct daytime running lights and rear doors that open in the opposite direction of the front ones.

Great emphasis is placed on light technologies, smart windows and surfaces that show greetings, pictograms, useful information.

This is done using an interactive light bar under the hood (VW calls it 3D Eyes) and an LED screen in the semi-transparent front part. When the driver approaches, the car initiates a seasonal visual and acoustic welcome setting and provides drivers and passengers with a weather forecast for the next two hours.

In autonomous driving mode, 3D Eyes communicates with other road users by exchanging useful information.

Another solution is Smart Windows with semi-transparent displays. As soon as the driver approaches, an AI-powered avatar will appear in the side window, start a conversation and offer its services. It provides the driver with the necessary information and useful tips, such as reminding the driver to bring an umbrella if rain is expected. Avatar also works internally, using windows as displays to display various interactive, informative and entertaining content.

Code ID is just a concept, but soon new models will be added to the ID family. In total, there will be 16 of them by 2030, including five innovations from the new ID UX sub-brand, which is aimed at new customers and will mark its market debut by 2027.
