Volkswagen makes the announcement that breaks the hearts of fans. The car giant has decided what will happen to the heat engines from now on.
For Volkswagen, the new generation of thermal engines is also the latest. The German car giant has announced that it will no longer develop a new generation of combustion engines. The Germans are thus starting to achieve their goal: to comply with future Euro 7 pollution rules.
“We will develop the current engines so that they become as efficient as possible. We still need them for a certain period of time “, says Ralf Brandstatter, CEO of the company for the German publication Automobile week. “At the moment, we are not considering the development of a new generation of internal combustion engines,” Brandstatter explained.
At the same time, Volkswagen is investing huge sums in development electric cars. By 2030, the Germans plan to have no less than six plants operating batteries for zero-emission cars. 2030 is also the deadline for the German carmaker which plans for 70% of its sales figures to be taken into account for electric models, according to the Accelerated strategy, launched on 5 March.
Not only Volkswagen is gradually giving up combustion engines
Ralf Brandstatter’s announcement is in line with the statements of Audi CEO Markus Duesmann. Earlier this month, Duesmann said Audi would no longer develop combustion engines. Instead, it will choose to adapt the existing ones in the range to the new emission standards. Several plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid versions will appear in the model ranges.
According to Duesman’s statements, customers will be the ones to decide when Audi will completely give up internal combustion engines.
Most likely, the other car manufacturers within the Volkswagen Group, such as Skoda and SEAT, have similar plans.
