Volkswagen is temporarily shutting down production of Passat and Aerton plants at its plant in Emden, Germany, due to a semiconductor crisis. The Germans have announced that production will resume on January 10, 2022. Production of the new ID.4 electric model will begin at Emden next year.
The move comes a week earlier than originally planned. A first step taken by the German manufacturer this week was to reduce the work schedule.

A spokeswoman for Volkswagen Group stated for the German publication Automobilwoche, quoted by Autonews.com, that this reduction in working hours equates to a loss of 70 working days in 2021. This is a “massive reduction” for Volkswagen employees.
As a result, only 120,000 cars were produced at the Emden plant this year, with about 70,000 fewer cars than planned. For Volkswagen it is the lowest level of production from 1958 to the present.
The Wolfsburg plant, where it is produced, is in the same situation VW Golf model. In the case of this assembly line, there were also temporary production shutdowns.
In fact, due to the global semiconductor crisis, several car manufacturers such as Audi, Volvo and Renault have also had to stop production in various European factories.
