The star of compact cars in Europe, you all know it, is the Volkswagen Golf. Beyond the Old Continent, the Golf is also sold in many markets, notably in the United States where the German compact has been sold since 1974. But after 50 years of career, Volkswagen will stop marketing its Golf.
“The seventh generation is the last compact to be sold on our soil, but the GTI and Golf R will continue the legacy”, says Hein Schafer, vice president of product and brand marketing in the United States. Because yes, even if the eighth generation of the Golf has been sold for more than a year in Europe, it was not marketed in the country of Uncle Sam, Americans have stuck with the seventh generation Golf.
This model is no longer sold except from stock, with a single engine and a single finish. The engine in question is a 1.4-liter TSI four-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. This block can be combined with a six-speed manual gearbox or an astonishing eight-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox instead of the traditional dual-clutch DSG that we know from home.
As stated above by the brand’s Vice President of Product and Marketing Strategy in the United States, the eighth-generation Golf will cross the Atlantic, but only for the GTI and R versions, the two sports variants of 245 and 320 hp respectively. For more civilized Volkswagens, the Jetta will be responsible for representing German compacts in the USA. As a reminder, this model was initially a tri-body version of the Golf before becoming a specific model when the sixth generation was launched in 2011.
