Volkswagen resumed production in Slovakia after two weeks, and Stellantis is interrupting it

Volkswagen manufactures Škoda Karoq, Audi Q7, Audi Q8, Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne models in Slovakia as part of SUVs. Last year, the assembly of an SUV accounted for three quarters of the production of the carmaker’s Bratislava plant. The factory also produces small city vehicles, including the Škoda Citigo model, which were not covered by the aforementioned production interruption.

“We will strive to catch up with missed production as much as possible,” said Makay. Production of SUVs at the factory was suspended on April 29 due to a lack of components.

Last year, more than 309,000 vehicles rolled off Volkswagen’s production lines in Bratislava. This was a year-on-year decrease of 18 percent, due to the effects of the coronavirus infection, which caused the company to shut down production for five weeks.

The Stellantis Group, which manufactures Peugeot 208 and Citroën C3 vehicles in Slovakia, suspended production in March due to a shortage in the supply of semiconductor components. She did the same in some other days.

Problems with the lack of chips have previously been recorded by other car companies, including the Mladá Boleslav car manufacturer Škoda Auto. The automotive industry has the largest share in industrial production in Slovakia. In addition to Stellantis and Volkswagen, Jaguar Land Rover and Kia also assemble vehicles in Slovakia. Many Slovak component manufacturers are linked to them.
