When CNBC reported on Monday that the German carmaker in the US wants to change its name to Voltswagen, it seemed to be an early April joke. Especially since the news network relied on a premature press release. That same day, however, a confirmation came in a new one press release.
“More than a name change, Voltswagen is a public statement of future investments in electric mobility,” the press release states. “We might change our K for a T, but what we’re not changing is the dedication to making the best vehicles.”
Joke got out of hand
On Wednesday, Volkswagen finally admitted to CNN that it was an April 1 joke that got out of hand, a few days before the actual day.
“Volkswagen’s US arm will not change its name to Voltswagen,” the company said in a statement CNN Business. The new name was intended as an April 1 announcement to highlight the launch of the all-electric ID.4 SUV. and to underscore our commitment to bringing electric mobility to everyone. We will provide additional updates on this shortly. ‘
Volkswagen, which was under fire six years ago for its role in the emissions scandal dieselgate, has made a radical shift to electric vehicles under new CEO Herbert Diess. Recently, the German automaker announced that it will build six new battery factories in Europe over the next ten years. The new strategy does not harm VW on the stock market. Volkswagen’s share has doubled since the end of October 2020.
