Volkswagen loses the case of “diesel scandal” before the German judiciary

The highest civil court in Germany ruled that Volkswagen pay compensation to a person who bought one of its diesel cars and was equipped with a program that gives false data on exhaust emissions.

This ruling is considered a reliable reference in about 60,000 lawsuits filed against the company in Germany.

The court’s decision stipulated that the company, which is the largest car production company in the world, indemnify the lawsuit, Herbert Gilbert, with the value of the car he purchased taking into consideration the loss of its value over the years.

Volkswagen had previously reached an agreement to compensate 235,000 buyers of its cars in Germany, at a value of 830 million euros.

The company has previously paid more than 30 billion euros in fines, compensation and offers to buy its cars since the scandal erupted in 2015.

Volkswagen had said at the time that it had used illegal software to tamper with the emissions of gas emissions from its diesel-powered cars.

The company said about 11 million of its cars were equipped with a “beeper” that told the engines they were being tested. These engines then change their performance to improve test results.

Volkswagen has faced a barrage of lawsuits since then.

It is noteworthy that about 90 thousand people in England and Wales have filed lawsuits against Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda companies owned by the Volkswagen Group.

Last month, Britain’s Supreme Court ruled that the mentioned software was already designed to tamper with the results of emission tests as instructed by the European Union.

The company’s current and former senior employees are facing criminal charges in Germany.
