The German car group Volkswagen is discussing with potential partners, including the French car manufacturer Renault, regarding a cooperation for the development of its 20,000 euro electric car, according to an article published on Friday in the German daily Handelsblatt, according to Agerpres.
Handelsblatt claims that Volkswagen is interested in cooperating to develop a platform that will become an accessible electric vehicle for the mass of buyers. The sources stated that the discussions with Renault are currently at an early stage and may not end with an agreement.
According to Handelsblatt, an annual production of between 200,000 and 250,000 vehicles would be the target for both partners.
In March of this year, Volkswagen revealed the details of an electric car with a cost of 25,000 euros, under development, which would be launched by 2025, have an autonomy of 450 kilometers and be able to be charged from 10% to 80% in about 20 minutes. At that time, Volkswagen announced that it was also working on a 20,000 euro vehicle but did not provide any other information.
Separately, French carmaker Renault last month announced the launch of the “Legend”, a new electric vehicle with a cost of less than 20,000 euros, before the subsidies were applied. Destined to be an urban vehicle par excellence, compact and manufactured in Europe, the new “Legend” model would appear on the market from 2025, Renault indicated.
The talks come amid aggressive entry into the EU market of much cheaper Chinese-made electric cars.
