A couple of years ago, the German car manufacturer Volkswagen had big plans to build electric car battery factories around the world to supply batteries for their cars – it was planned to build six new factories by 2030, but it seems that these plans will not come to fruition. in the works.
“Plans to build new factories and expand will depend a lot on the development of the electric car market in the world,” said Thomas Schmal, one of VW’s key technical figures, in an interview with German media.
The change in plans will mainly affect VW’s plans in Europe and North America. If several plants were initially planned in Canada, now the plan is to build just one, but larger plant in the Ontario region. Plans are also being changed in Europe, but Volkswagen is trying to maintain some flexibility, that is, if there is a rapid increase in demand, the manufacturer will be able to increase production volumes and meet the demand.
Volkswagen, together with its cooperation partners, continues to work on the development of solid-state batteries to provide higher battery energy capacity and better parameters for future models. For now, it is expected that the production of batteries of this type will begin before the end of this decade, but everything will, of course, depend on how quickly these batteries can be developed.
