German carmaker Volkswagen said it was hit by a major IT problem that halted car production at its plants on Wednesday, Reuters reported.

Europe’s leading carmaker said the entire group, which includes the Porsche and Audi brands, was affected.

An Audi spokesman confirmed that production at the division had also been affected, adding that the implications were being analysed.

Reuters said it was a blow to the company, which is already suffering from lower demand for electric cars, which has reduced workloads at the Zwickau plant and could force changes to the long-standing three-shift system.

Volkswagen said an “IT failure of network components” occurred Wednesday afternoon at its headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany.

The outage also affected sites in Emden, Osnabrück, Hanover, Dresden and Zwickau and component plants in Braunschweig, Kassel, Chemnitz and Salzgitter, Reuters reported.

“According to current analyses, it is unlikely that an external attack was the cause of the system malfunction,” Volkswagen said, adding that efforts to fix the problem were underway.
