Volkswagen Faces Major IT Failure: Production Halted in German Factories

German car manufacturer Volkswagen suffered a major IT failure on Wednesday, which brought several of the company’s factories in Germany to a standstill. Volkswagen is investigating the disruption to the IT network and says it is still unclear when production can resume.

According to the German newspaper Handelsblatt, the group’s central infrastructure has completely failed. Production in at least four factories in Germany has come to a standstill and the breakdown also affects the head office in Wolfsburg.

The cause is still unknown, but an outside attack would be unlikely. The disruption in data traffic has brought car factories in Wolfsburg, Emden, Zwickau and Osnabrück to a standstill, as well as parts factories in Kassel, Braunschweig and Salzgitter.

According to Volkswagen, the malfunction started at the beginning of the afternoon. It would not be a cyber attack. The car company has set up a crisis team.

It is not yet clear whether foreign factories are also affected by the problem, a spokesperson said. At Audi Brussels, which is part of the VW group, the spokesperson said on Wednesday evening that they are “looking at” the impact on the factory.
