Volkswagen Faces Lawsuits Over Electric Car Battery Fire on Cargo Ship – $155 Million in Damages

What can happen due to a short circuit? Will it pop the traffic jams? That’s right, but an entire ocean-going ship with thousands of cars on board could sink.

Right now, the Volkswagen Group is facing lawsuits accusing the company of causing a fire on board a huge cargo ship in a Porsche electric car battery in 2022. The plaintiffs include Mitsui OSK Lines, the ship’s operator, and Allianz, a major insurance company.

The Panama-flagged Felicity Ace caught fire off the Azores archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean two years ago. The crew was saved, but the 3,965 cars on board were not. According to some estimates, the damage amounted to at least $155 million.

The plaintiffs claim the fire was caused by a lithium-ion battery in a Porsche electric vehicle that caught fire, and claim that VW failed to inform them of the dangers and necessary precautions when transporting such vehicles.

Another phobia to add to the collection of electric car owners.
