Volkswagen Developing Affordable Electric Car ID.1 to Hit the Market in 2027

German automotive giant Volkswagen is actively developing its smallest and cheapest electric model, which is likely to get the name ID.1. The company’s management has set a deadline for the car to go into production – it will happen in 2027, but the initial price of the car is around 20 thousand euros, confirmed Thomas Schaefer, CEO of the VW brand.

He says this car will be “affordable electric mobility for all”. Basically, it’s exactly what we’ve come to expect from Volkswagen. “Right now we are in the middle of the development process and we know what the car should look like. The biggest challenge will be deciding where to produce it,” Schaefer said at VW’s annual press conference, noting that the project is financially challenging and the manufacturer needs to produce it in large volumes to make a profit.

Currently, Volkswagen is considering at least four different strategies to better realize this. It is also no secret that the German manufacturer has started talks with Renault about the joint production of compact class electric cars. It will most likely be a different model.

Schaefer confirmed that the serial version of the ID.2all concept car will go into production in 2026. The boss of the car manufacturer described it as follows – roomy like a Golf, available like a Polo. This car will be built on the MEB Entry platform, but will be able to drive around 450 kilometers on a single charge, while the price is planned to be around 25 thousand euros.
