Volkswagen and Umicore’s Battery Component Production in Poland: A Step Towards Cheaper Electric Cars for Everyone

Battery components for Volkswagen electric cars will be produced in Poland. IONWAY, founded by the automotive concern and the Belgian group Umicore, will build its first plant for the production of cathode active material in the Polish city of Nisa in the south of the country. The total investment should amount to 1.7 billion euros (41.6 billion CZK) and its goal is cheaper production that will make electric cars available to everyone, he said in declaration IONWAY boss Thomas Jansseune.

Umicore is a leading company focused on recycling and materials technology and is among the largest producers of materials for the production of batteries. It already has a production plant in Nis. A new factory for Volkswagen will be located next door. The start of production is planned for 2025. By 2030, 900 jobs are to be created here.

The plant will produce cathode material that Volkswagen can use to make batteries for its electric cars. In addition, IONWAY also wants to supply the precursors needed for battery production. This will require the construction of another plant. However, it has not yet been decided where this plant will be located.

The joint venture between Volkswagen and Umicore wants to supply material for 2.2 million electric cars annually. This should cover a large part of the demand for battery factories that the automaker is planning in Europe, the DPA agency pointed out.
