MEETING POINT – The ever-increasing number of low-cost electric cars coming from China does not leave European manufacturers indifferent, who do not want to raise the white flag on the affordable car market. The German newspaper Handelsblatt reports that the Volkswagen Group would be looking for partners with whom to jointly develop a 20,000 euro electric car. For this reason he would have started some negotiations, currently still in its embryonic stage, with Renault. Both companies have already announced their plans to produce a economical electric vehicle: Volkswagen with the ID.1, which should be launched in the next few years, while Renault with a possible production version derived from the concept Twingo (photo above).
SHARED TECHNOLOGIES – It would not be the first time that the Volkswagen Group shares the platform of their vehicles with other companies. In fact, the German company already shares the MEB EV architecture with Ford, which the blue oval uses for the Explorer. Moreover, sharing technologies with other partners is part of the logic of one cost reduction for which the Wolfsburg group is preparing (Who the news). The project ID.1 it planned to use a completely new architecture, with Skoda as the key brand in the development of this platform. However, in November, Oliver Blume, CEO of the Volkswagen group, declared that he thought it would be possible to produce an electric car from 20.000 euro by the second half of the decade, but that a final decision in this regard had yet to be taken.
PLATFORM ALREADY READY – At the same time a new one Renault Twingo it should be mass produced by 2026, for a price of less than 20,000 euros. To be able to offer such a low price point, the key will be efficiency rather than a huge battery. There AmpR Small platform of the Renault group, which will be the basis of models such as the next Renault 5 and the Nissan Micra, should help further reduce the price thanks to economies of scale. If this wasn’t enough, Luca de Meo, CEO of the Renault group, hinted that the French brand could make use of external partnerships to better develop the Twingo. So the common goals of the two automotive giants could eventually converge on a shared project.
