Volkshochschule Prien maintains its optimism even in difficult times

VHS Prien is repositioning itself internally – its long-term chairman Rudolf Eberhardt is also leaving the management team. While there were still 535 events with 5854 participants to look forward to in 2019, the organizers are annoyed by renewed bureaucratism. Due to the corona, many courses are now taking place online.

Prien – Corona has changed the lessons and the budget planning of the Volkshochschule Chiemsee eV – however, First Chairman Rudolf Eberhardt and VHS Managing Director Elisabeth Girg were able to report on a satisfactory year 2019. They are also pleased about the high level of approval of the proposed changes by the 27 members entitled to vote.

Initially, a reorganization of the management team within the VHS with the same legal form as an association is planned, as well as a change from an honorary to a full-time executive board and the installation of an administrative board.

Eberhardt is now an honorary member

For this purpose, the statutes of the VHS were revised and decided unanimously by the general assembly. The organs of the VHS are now the general assembly, the financial advisory board, the administrative board and the board of directors.

Rudolf Eberhardt was chairman of the adult education center in Prien for 15 years. For this time and for leading the association out of stormy waters into calm and successful waters, Rudolf Eberhardt not only received a lot of praise and a certificate, but also honorary membership. “You have developed the VHS into an important educational institution in western Chiemgau,” said managing director Elisabeth Girg, paying tribute to him. She emphasized that it was his special merit, in consultation with the community, to have found premises in Hochfellnstrasse that could be acquired by the Volkhochschule. Prien’s Mayor Andreas Friedrich also praised Rudolf Eberhardt’s long and active commitment with the words: “Nobody can do anything for Corona, you and your team have always found new solutions.”

Major changes

In addition to its supporting members, the VHS has 13 Chiemgau communities as sponsors and sponsors of the association. In 2019 it was able to hold 535 events with 5 854 participants, for a total of 10 056 teaching hours. “5412 of these were language lessons. A second, very successful teaching focus was the subject of health with 197 events, ”explained Eberhardt. In addition to other specialist areas, the topic of culture was in great demand. There were significant changes to the integration courses, which were reflected in the amount of the subsidies from the Federal Office for Migration. While the number of participants here, according to Eberhardt, has declined, the amount of documentation and bureaucracy have risen sharply. For the current financial year, due to the current framework conditions, income and expenses of 674,000 euros are calculated, almost 200,000 euros less than in 2019.

“We are cautiously optimistic”

The election of the new board of directors resulted in long-time course instructor Susanne Schumacher from Prien as chairperson. She has been working for the VHS in the field of communication and rhetoric for twelve years. Herbert Weißenfels from Priener was elected as her deputy. Further members of the new board of directors are Gudrun Unverdorben from Bad Endorf and Georg Spindler from Teisendorf, both of whom have already been active on the entire board, and mayor Andreas Friedrich by virtue of his office. The auditors are the tax advisor Thomas Fritz and the lawyer Hans-Christian Türck.

Girg gave an outlook on the adjusted courses; health and language courses, among other things, would be offered online. “We are cautiously optimistic,” said Girg about the overall development.
