Impressive pictures of impressive destruction. These drone recordings from Wednesday show the lava in the Spanish village of Todoque on the Canary Island of La Palma. The magma comes dangerously close to several houses and the village church. Since the eruption on Sunday, the lava of the volcano Cumbre Vieja has destroyed around 150 houses and forced thousands of people to flee – especially in Los Jianos de Aridane and nearby El Paso. The lava has already burned everything in its way in several places – including houses, schools and banana plantations. Attempts to channel them into a ravine to limit the damage have so far met with little success. There is concern among experts that contact with Atlantic seawater could lead to explosions and a cloud of toxic gases. The shipping authority has therefore closed an area around two nautical miles off the coast.
