The Semeru volcano has erupted on the Indonesian island of Java. There is an ash cloud three kilometers high above the volcano. Hundreds of people in the immediate vicinity have been evacuated. There are no reports of victims.
Local residents and tourists have been advised to stay at least four kilometers away from the volcano. Military and police officers hand out protective masks and food in the area.
The Semuru is the highest volcano in Java and is located in the middle of the Bromo National Park, a popular destination for tourists. The volcano is regularly active.
Indonesia has more than 120 active volcanoes. Thousands of people have been evacuated as a precaution in recent weeks.
