Due to volcanic emissions, according to the recommendations of the authorities, thousands of people have been forced into isolation due to deteriorating air quality. In particular, due to the hardened lava – the surface of the island has increased by 338 hectares.
It is noted that locals have to clean ash from their homes and businesses every day. It is put into special containers for further use as fertilizer.
“We are constantly removing this dust and ash in order to more or less keep everything clean,” said one of the inhabitants of the island.
