A volcano has erupted on the Japanese island of Suwanosejima. Japanese media are not yet reporting any injuries or damage. There are also concerns in Iceland due to a volcano. The village of Grindavik has been evacuated again.
The Icelandic channel RUV reports that the risk of cracks in the ground has increased. Lava can emerge from this. Last month a volcano erupted there.
The approximately 4,000 residents of Grindavik also had to leave in November when the volcanic eruption was imminent. After more than a month they were allowed to go home again. But now, about three weeks later, there is another evacuation order. From Monday, residents will have to stay elsewhere for three weeks.
The lava did not flow into the village after the eruption on December 19, but authorities say aftershocks could still occur and cause cracks. Lava could then flow from such a crack.
Suwanosejima alert level raised to three
Following the volcanic eruption on the Japanese island of Suwanosejima, authorities have raised the warning level to three on a scale of five.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is asking mountain climbers and others to take measures to protect themselves and stay away from the volcano. Rocks are said to have landed up to 1 kilometer from the crater, but the agency warns that they could fly twice as far.
Suwanosejima is a small island southwest of the large island of Kyushu with about fifty residents. The volcano there is one of the most active in the country.
