Volcanic eruption in southwest Iceland, air traffic stopped | Abroad

The volcanic eruption takes place on the Reykjanes peninsula, about 40 kilometers outside the capital Reykjavík. In recent weeks, there have been thousands of small earthquakes in the area, the Icelandic weather service said.

The volcano at Mount Fagradalsfjall makes the sky above Reykjavík glow red. The Icelandic government is calling on people to stay calm and under no circumstances head towards the eruption. A team of scientists will map the extent of the eruption by helicopter.
