Aalst Carnival 2025: A Celebration of Tradition, Art, and New Measures
The Aalst Carnival, a UNESCO-recognized event, is gearing up for its 2025 edition with a fresh artistic vision and renewed commitment to safety. This year’s theme, “Oilsjt Carnival is written on our loif”, reflects the deep-rooted connection between the people of Aalst and their beloved festival.
The carnival’s official poster, designed by Acke, has sparked conversations. “I was approached in a sandwich shop about the fact that once again the figure of a ‘voil jeanet’ was central,” Acke explains. ”Couldn’t you have drawn a lovely lady? During Aalst Carnival, the focus is often on the raw side of the party: men who dress up as ugly figures. Well, I accepted the challenge and resolutely went for a beautiful, feminine figure on the poster.”
This artistic shift highlights the evolving identity of the carnival, blending tradition with modern creativity. the poster’s font, inspired by the tribal hype of the 1990s, adds a nostalgic yet vibrant touch. “The colorful tattoos on the poster symbolize the unity and pride of the carnival community,” says Acke.
The theme resonates deeply with Aalst residents, many of whom proudly display tattoos celebrating their city and carnival. From onions to postal codes and references to carnival groups, these tattoos are a testament to the festival’s cultural significance.
However, the 2025 edition isn’t just about art and tradition. New measures are being introduced to ensure safety and compliance. For instance, additional checks will be conducted on mega carts with generators, wich have been a recurring issue despite the ban. The police will strictly enforce this rule, removing non-compliant carts to prevent dangerous situations.
