Vodafone, the City of Düsseldorf, Stadtwerke Düsseldorf, Düsseldorf Marketing and Ilg Außenwerbung are launching a model project that is intended to make the often tedious search for new 5G locations easier: 5G advertising pillars. Because, especially in city centers, it is often difficult to find new roof locations for cell phone masts with a corresponding connection to the power grid. Germany’s first 5G advertising pillar in Düsseldorf supplies a radius of 400 meters with Vodafone’s 5G network. According to Vodafone, speeds of up to 1,000 megabits per second and minimal response times of less than 10 milliseconds are possible.
From the outside, the special advertising pillar can hardly be distinguished from its classic counterparts. Vodafone installed the three 5G antennas and all the technology in the basilica-shaped roof and the concrete body of the 4.79 meter high and 1.62 meter wide advertising pillar. The 5G advertising pillar was equipped by Vodafone with completely independent 5G standalone technology. This enables full 5G performance and a latency of less than 10 milliseconds.
The initiator of the project was Düsseldorf Marketing. The state capital Düsseldorf supports the idea and provides the locations. The basilica-shaped roof, which turns the advertising pillar into a 5G station, was designed by radio network planning teams together with mobile radio experts from Vodafone. Ilg Außenwerbung took over the production and made sure that it fits seamlessly into the cityscape. The Stadtwerke subsidiary Netzgesellschaft Düsseldorf brought the technology to the power grid. In order to make the 5G technology functional, ten meters of power cable were laid up to the column. In the same step, the partners connected the 5G advertising column to the fast fiber optic network. The 5G advertising pillar from Vodafone has also received a location certificate from the Federal Network Agency to prove its safe operation. The three 5G antennas were also set up in cooperation with Ericsson.
“5G is particularly advantageous where many people are on the move with their smartphones – in pedestrian zones, in busy squares or at intersections. But the search for new locations is difficult in many places. In Düsseldorf we are therefore starting a model project for large cities in Germany. The good old advertising pillar is becoming a modern 5G station that nobody sees, but that brings everyone fast network. This is the perfect addition to bring 5G to any location, ”says Gerhard Mack, Head of Technology at Vodafone Germany.
“Ilg outdoor advertising provides the locations and developed the modern advertising pillar model ‘Basilica’, in which the technology and 5G antennas are integrated. Together with our partners in Düsseldorf, we are happy to be able to make an important contribution to the introduction of the 5G future network in Düsseldorf, ”said Kai Ilg, managing director and owner of Ilg-Außenwerbung.
Another 150 pillars are to be added in the state capital over the next few years. They should ensure even better reception and greater network stability on particularly busy streets and squares.
