Vodafone is conducting a pilot in the Netherlands to use 5G on its own frequency band, instead of a shared frequency with 4G. The provider confirmed this to Tweakers, after a tweaker noticed that Vodafone masts support 5G on a new frequency.

Vodafone confirms the pilot, but does not want to say anything about further plans for 5G on its own frequency band. “Vodafone is currently offering 5G via Dynamic Spectrum Sharing in the 1800MHz band. In addition, a pilot is also underway in which the 700MHz band is used in certain places to offer 5G,” says spokesperson Farisa el Moussaoui. “It is therefore still too early to make any further statements about further plans and timings.”
Tweaker jk-5, operator of Antennnekaart.nl, had noticed that Vodafone had started offering 5G via the 700MHz band. Tweaker henk_dh saw that on his phone. The pilot will take place in Rotterdam, among other places. KPN and Odido, formerly T-Mobile, have been using that band for 5G for a few years. So far, Vodafone has only used 5G via Dynamic Spectrum Sharing, where 5G and 4G share the same band and part of the spectrum operates via 5G depending on the demand for 5G. The CEO of Vodafone Group previously said that it is not real 5G and misleads consumers. Vodafone then stated that it is ‘real 5G’.
