Vocero: Republican Leader McConnell, Hospitalized for Fall

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell tripped and fell at a hotel on Wednesday and was hospitalized, a spokesman for the senator said.

The fall occurred when McConnell, 81, was attending a private dinner at a hotel in Washington. He was admitted to a hospital for treatment, said his spokeswoman, Doug Andres.

In 2019, the Republican Party leader, who survived childhood polio, tripped and fell at his Kentucky home, sustaining a broken shoulder that required him to undergo surgery. The Senate had entered a summer recess and he worked from home for a few weeks while he recovered.

First elected in 1984, when the new Congress was formed in January McConnell became the longest-serving Senate leader, surpassing the previous record of 16 years.

The Senate, where the median age is 65, has had several absences recently due to illness.

The office of California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein, 90, said she was hospitalized last week to be treated for shingles.

And Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman, 53, who suffered a stroke on the campaign trail last year, is expected to stay out for a few more weeks while he receives treatment for clinical depression.
