The chairman of the vocational school advisory board of the vocational school for music, District Administrator Thomas Habermann, described the facility in Bad Königshofen as a cultural pearl. A big thank you went to school principal Ernst Oestreicher, who will retire on February 12, 2021. A good successor has certainly been found in his successor, Elmar Sebastian Koch. What is important is the personal enthusiasm that you should have as a manager. That was the case with Oestreicher and this certainly also applies to his successor, who will officially take over on January 1, 2021. He is looking forward to the new task.
The designated headmaster is still head of the music school association in Werne an der Lippe, to which five municipalities belong. A vocational school for music is a new challenge for him. On the subject of Corona, he said that this also affects other artistic areas and that cultural workers are often overlooked. That must change in the future. Artists and creators should become more visible.
One should look to the future with optimism, says Habermann. He added that the culture is suffering badly from the corona pandemic and interest could wane. “Hopefully this is only a temporary phenomenon.” The question in the room was that in future the number of pupils could decrease as young people turn to other areas. The new school might be an attraction here, said Oestreicher. Koch saw this too and spoke of possible open-air concerts in the coming year. It is important to present yourself to the outside world.
Competition as an opportunity to present art
The subject of “art in architecture” was also addressed at the meeting in Würzburg. A competition in which works of art are exhibited on construction sites. Oestreicher had established first contacts with the vocational school for wood sculptors in Bischofsheim, who would like to present their works in the foyer of the new school. It was agreed that “Art in Architecture” also relates to the respective facility.

District Assembly President Erwin Dotzel thanked Oestreicher for his commitment in the past decades, especially for bridging the vacancy period until the new headmaster arrives. “Stay connected to the vocational school for music!” Karin Renner, as a member of the advisory board of the Hammelburg Music Academy, also underlined this. Her wish: Oestreicher may continue to be active in musical life. Something that will certainly be the case, he added, since he is represented in various offices of musical life in the Presidium.
New construction is delayed until Easter
Regarding the new building, Oestreicher said that it would be delayed by a few months. The move is planned for the Easter holidays. Looking back, he named some of the few events that were held in the 2019/2020 school year. This included laying the foundation stone and topping-out ceremony for the new school, as well as the presentation of the Lower Franconian Monument Prize at the Hammelburg Music Academy. There was a performance by the guitar and saxophone ensemble on the stage of the Bavarian Radio at the Mainfrankenmesse, a discussion concert, a symposium and the concert “Grenzüberweisung” in cooperation with the cultural agency as well as Advent concerts in Sennfeld and Bad Königshofen. In addition, there was a lecture and a chamber concert for the 250th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven in 2019.
No more concert events since March
Due to the corona, all concert events had to be canceled from mid-March. The exam concerts in the construction year were held with a reduced audience. A cooperation agreement was reached on April 23, 2020 via video conference between the district of Lower Franconia, the district of Rhön-Grabfeld, the Bad Königshofen vocational school for music and the municipal conservatory of Larissa in Greece. Oestreicher mentioned the extensive initial equipment of the new school. Essentially, this includes the furnishing, the equipment of the classrooms and the digital equipment. A revision of the Hey organ becomes necessary after more than 20 years.
30 years of efforts have achieved their goal
The vocational school for music in Bad Königshofen still enjoys a good reputation far beyond the district boundaries as a training center for state-certified ensemble leaders. The transfer rates to secondary music training institutes are evidence of a highly qualified and committed teaching staff, says Oestreicher. “The aim of my efforts in more than 30 years was to create a school atmosphere in which teaching and learning should be possible in a motivating way.”
