After the dream season, Slovak skier Petra Vlhová will face new challenges and the third Olympics.

She was preparing for the new year in Italy, but she didn’t miss the Swiss slopes either. Less than two weeks before the start of the season, he feels he needs a few more days in the snow. She will complete her preparations in Austria, where the inaugural World Cup races await her, a huge slalom in Sölden.

A year ago she left with third place, this time she would like to start a little better. “The first rounds in Sölden didn’t work out for me, so now I’m trying to prepare better. If I want to win, I need both rounds for that. I’m quite good at the latter, ” said Vlhová after the press conference.

The higher difficulty of the Vlhová slope does not interfere, on the contrary, in the case of ideal weather, it is one of its favorites. “I think it fits me because I like challenging hills. I have the necessary technique and strength for this. But of course, there are many factors that can affect this. We will see what the conditions will be. Last year there was fog in the 1st round. In general, the hill is difficult also because it is high, so we are a little out of breath when we come down, but I think it suits me. ”

In addition to better weather, athletes should also be pleased by the better spectator scenery, which was absent last year due to epidemiological measures. According to Skiweltcup.tv, about 5,000 fans are expected this time. “If they allow it, I will be happy to have fans there. I hope it moves a little and people can walk. ”

After a demanding and nerve-racking chase behind points and a large crystal globe, Vlhová has regenerated and is entering a new year in a positive mood. But he does not want to overtake with the results yet. “I feel good in giant slalom and slalom, but also in speed disciplines. We will try to do our best and find a form to make it as good as possible in Sölden.

I can’t predict what it will be like. I can only evaluate my feelings. Now I’m looking forward to the race, and the functioning of being together. I have a great team, I laugh a lot, I’m even happier than I used to be. In this way, it is also transferred to the skis, so it fills me more. ”

New coach and change of priorities

There is no doubt that the Slovak skier will be the winner of the World Cup under the scrutiny of fans and rivals. The curiosity of alpine skiing enthusiasts will probably be more focused on defending last year’s results, as the leader of the overall standings has ended her long-standing collaboration with Italian coach Livio Magoni, with whom she has achieved all previous successes from medal campaigns at the world championships to small globes.

Public discussions on whether Swiss Mauro Pini will be a suitable replacement for Vlhová expects, but at the same time adds that this change was necessary and came in handy. “It’s normal for a person to compare, and I won’t blame people when they compare that it was different with Livio and Mauro. But they have to respect that it was my decision. That’s life. Now I’m happy, I needed this change. I wanted it too. It was not easy. I also sometimes compare them, and then I think, thank God. ”

Along with the change of some members of the team, after the overall victory in the World Cup, there were also changes in plans, summer schedule, but also priorities. “Immediately after the season, I went on vacation, where I rested. Then I caught another one. I needed it. Rest was very important, also at the expense of skiing less. At the end of it all, it’s me who has to give performance. It has to fill me so that I put everything into it so that I don’t come to the hill with dislike and the thought: ‘God, again’.

I do not think about how many races and where I will go, whether they will cancel the discipline or not. What will be, it will be, I will do my best. The priority will certainly not be a big globe, but I will focus on the World Cup. And as the Olympics approach, so does it. ”

He does not follow the opponents

The competition in the fight for podium placements will be numerous this year as well in all categories. Mikaela Shiffrin, the holder of the small globe for slalom, Katharina Liensberger, will report for triumphs in technical disciplines, and after dealing with health problems, Michelle Gisin and Wendy Holdener will also fight. There will be no shortage of high-speed competitions between Lara Gut-Behrami, Sofia Goggio and Corinne Suter.

However, Petra Vlhová does not pay much attention to her opponents, she prefers to invest her time in her own sports development and progress. “Yes, I notice them, but I do not dwell at all on what they do and how they do it. When we may be training together somewhere, I will look at them, but first of all I will focus on myself. ”

She also limited her contact on social networks, even before the battle for the big globe. “I’m only watching Shiffrin and some guys on Instagram. Last year I stopped watching other competitors. I really want to give as much effort as possible so that I can move forward and go to the maximum. I still have goals that I want to achieve and I am working on it. By watching other people, I can’t help myself. ”

THERE IS NO TIP – FIVE IS SKIING

Petra Vlhová will enter the season with the titular partner of the First Betting Company Niké. “If we see that Petre will help something, that Petra needs it, then I assure you that we will pamper her a little, she will have advantages with us. Niké becomes her biggest partner. I believe that even now we will make a significant contribution to its success, which will please the whole of Slovakia, “ promised CEO Nike Doc. Ing. Otto Berger CSc.

An ordinary fan will register the most significant changes in the cooperation between Nike and Petra Vlhová on a new overalls and racing helmet. “Throughout the season, Petra will be represented by Nike’s branding – but by her own brand. We believe that people will appreciate that we have moved ourselves to the background and have paid Peter the tribute that he deserves as the most prominent figure in our sport. “ said Executive Director Nike Ing. Roman Berger.
