Success, reality or disappointment? What was the first half of Vladimir Weiss st. in Slovane Bratislava? And was it the last? Ladislav Borbély, an expert and president of the Union of Football Coaches of Slovakia, is looking for answers in an interview for ŠPORT.sk.

Slovan scored 8 points in the Conference League, but 6 against Lincoln, Gibraltar. In addition, he defeated only the Irish Shamrock, against YB Bern, Olympiakos, FC Copenhagen and PAOK achieved a balance of 0-4-4. Success, reality or disappointment?

“It has been confirmed that we are facing a harsh reality on the international scene. We are not enough for the average European teams at the moment. Talking about success without advancing, at least to the spring part of the Conference League in the current format of the European Cups, is pretending to be something that does not correspond to reality. ”

Why didn’t Slovan achieve more?

“Let’s just take the match in Copenhagen. He issued a very negative report to Slovak club football and Slovan as its representative. Slovan did not meet the basic elements of the game necessary for confrontation at this international level. In some meetings he had bright passages, but with Slovan’s ambitions they must be a whole match. ”

It’s about coach Vladimir Weiss st. or about players?

“Many players have large reserves, Slovan’s staff is qualitatively unbalanced with a number of holes. There is a small group that meets the requirements for international confrontation. The second group does not achieve the required quality, but in certain circumstances in a good team context it will play at an acceptable level. The biggest problem is the third group of players who do not have the quality of Slovan. And especially Slovan, who wants to be internationally confrontable. ”

Do you specify names?

“I do not have all the necessary documents and I do not want to enter into coach Weiss’s internal analysis. However, it is evident that there are many piano carriers, piano tuners, but few pianists in the staff. In addition, I feel that more players have trouble switching from comfort zone to discomfort. Without it, there is no success on the international stage. ”

Why can’t even a demanding coach Weiss push them into discomfort?

“The selection of players when completing the staff has not been optimal for a long time, some are rated higher than their performance limits. Despite the variable performance, they are enough for the first place in the domestic competition, but that is only one of Slovan’s goals. He is already facing these limits in the European confrontation, and in recent years he has earned international embarrassment rather than a reputation. ”

Slovan leads the league after the fall by 4 points, the casino rarely convinced. Why?

“The visualization of the game in the domestic competition does not sound dominant throughout the match, but in short sections. It must be automation, not an occasional phenomenon. Then the team can be transferred to the international level, although not to such an extent. If Slovan wants to succeed in Europe, the Slovak league must win by ten points and without … auxiliary bars. ”

Pre ŠPORT.sk you said that Weiss began a revival in the Slavs. How do you evaluate its implementation since the arrival of May?

“It is clear that a rational diagnosis of the condition has taken place. He eliminated certain types of players and brought new ones. In my opinion, it is still not enough, he has not finished the revival yet. There are still many players in the staff whose limits no longer drop to the required level. Weissa is still waiting for a demanding robot, but I caught one conversation and the problem may be whether everyone in the club looks at it with a common or different perspective. ”

You come across an interview with the CEO Ivan Kmotrík Jr. for SPORT?

“Yes. In such a demanding process, I would expect greater consistency of opinion. When Slovan gave Weiss a five-year contract, it should mean full confidence and identification with his vision. Failure to do so will degrade the effectiveness of the whole process.

When I, as a person from the outside, evaluate the available information, it is clear to me that there is a certain divergence of opinion in Slovan. It surprises me, since Weiss has only been in the club for half a year. For Slovan to be successful in Europe, it is essential to complete the revival process. Unfortunately, without the cooperation of the whole club, this will not be possible. ”

Where, in your view, did divergence of opinion originate?

“I can’t see inside the club, but the process of reconstruction of Slovan is probably more demanding than they defined at the beginning of the cooperation. And apparently they differ on how to proceed in each step. ”

What significant intervention in the squad is needed for the Slav to aspire to the group of the Champions League or the European League next season?

“The Champions League group is too far away at the moment, let’s talk about the European League group. Slovan definitely needs to strengthen the quality of the team by at least 2-3 strong players. The real economic possibilities and the will of the club are a serious factor. ”

Like the Godfather did not rule out a return to representation even Weiss himself can even imagine working on both benches for a short time. What resolution do you expect?

“It is unacceptable to go to such an archaic experiment again to lead both Slovan and Slovakia. Not in the short term, not at all. Both teams are undergoing a challenging process that requires time, commitment and full concentration.

From my point of view, it is unrealistic for one coach to tighten it up. It would be on the verge of an international faux pas. It is either-or and the outcome depends solely on the agreement of the participants. Perhaps it will be in favor of Slovak national and club football. ”
