The KGB was the intelligence agency of the Soviet Union, roughly equivalent to the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) in the United States or the Stasi (Staatssicherheitsdienst) in East Germany. Uniquely, Putin is known to have been a KGB intelligence officer as well as Stasi, two countries that were both communists (which had disbanded).

In 1976, Putin earned the rank of First Lieutenant. His duties in the KGB at that time focused on counterintelligence and monitoring foreign nationals. After training at the Andropov Red Banner Institute in Moscow and becoming fluent in German, Putin was assigned to Dresden (then in East Germany) under the guise of a translator for five years, from 1985 to 1990.

It is alleged that when he was assigned to Dresden Putin had a Stasi ID card which was found in good condition. Reports quoted from various sources say that with the card, Putin can access various Stasi facilities, but cannot carry out spying for the agency.

Putin’s access is updated every three months. It is not clear why Putin left the card in Dresden, but through an official statement by the Stasi Archives Agency (BStU), Putin received the card so that he could carry out KGB duties with the cooperation of the Stasi. Possibly, the KGB and the Stasi were indeed partners so that there could be an exchange of identity cards like the one Putin had at the time.

Putin’s biography book is entitled Mr Putin by Fiona Hill and Cliff Gaddy speculated that his mission at the time in Dresden was to recruit top Stasi and East German Communist Party officials, steal technology secrets, monitor visiting foreign nationals, or make undercover visits to West Germany.

In 1991, it was time for Putin to resign from the KBG and start his political career by working at the Saint Petersburg City Hall on the staff of Mayor Anatoly Sobchak. His political career continued to climb before he was finally appointed Director FSB – successor to the KGB – 1998.

Shortly after that or in December 1999, Russian President Boris Yeltsin resigned and appointed Putin as acting president until official elections came. In 2000, Putin won the presidential election with 53 percent of the vote and officially became President of Russia.

Citing pages Britannica, overall Putin served as prime minister for the first time for the period 1999-2000. Then he became president in the period 2000-2008 and returned as prime minister in 2008-2012, and then as president in 2012 until now.

Unmitigated, the man who is now 69 years old will even continue his leadership until 2036, until he is 83 years old.

In the early 1980s, Putin met Lyudmila Aleksandrovna Ocheretnaya in St. Petersburg. At that time, someone introduced the two of them and they felt compatible until they got married on July 28, 1983.

Despite being the First Lady of Russia, Lyudmila’s personal life is rarely highlighted in the media. It is known that before marrying Putin, she had been a flight attendant for the Russian airline, Aeroflot. Lyudmila is also fluent in French, German and Spanish.

The president of the “Red Bear Country” is blessed with two children named Mariya Putina and Yekaterina Putina. Neither of them have followed in their father’s footsteps in politics. Maria works as a health researcher on duty in Moscow, while Katrina works as a dancer.
