Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a video message to the G-20 leaders that it is necessary to think about how to stop the “tragedy” in Ukraine and added that Moscow has never refused to participate in peace talks with Kiev, TASS reported.
This is the first speech to the heads of 20 countries with the most developed economies in the world that the Russian head of state has made since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. He pointed out that some leaders have stated in their speeches that they are shocked by Russia’s continued “aggression” in its neighboring country. “Military actions are always a tragedy for specific people, specific families and countries in general. And undoubtedly we must think about how to end this tragedy,” Putin stressed.
A video conference of the summit was convened by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Putin skipped previous G20 meetings in India and Indonesia. Russia was then represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The last time Putin personally attended a G20 summit in 2019 in the Japanese city of Osaka, Reuters recalls.
