Vladimir Putin has chosen to continue the war until a final victory for Russia, and in Ukraine the existence of the European Union is at stake. This was warned by the High Representative of the EU for foreign affairs and security policy, Josep Borrell, in an interview with the British newspaper The Guardian.
Perhaps now is the time to assess the danger of the threat to all of Europe, not just Ukraine. If the EU does not quickly change course and mobilize its capabilities, it will allow Russia to win the war, the Spanish diplomat emphasized.
According to him, Putin will not be satisfied with the occupied part of Ukraine if the rest is within the Community.
“He will not give up the war, especially before the American elections, which could provide him with a much more favorable scenario. Therefore, we must prepare for a high-intensity conflict for a long time,” Borrell concluded, adding that the Russian president is ready to fight to the final victory.
According to Borel, Russia’s success depends on whether it can deploy as many troops as possible on the battlefield, given the highest number of casualties. At the same time, according to him, Putin made a mistake in assessing the potential of his army, the capabilities of the Ukrainian resistance, the will of the European Union, as well as NATO. “However, a terrorist country is willing to fight and let its people die.”
“Russia has never been able to become a nation. It has always been an empire with a tsar – including during the USSR and now with Putin. This is the constant about Russia, its political identity and, as a consequence, a threat to its neighbors – and especially for us,” Borrell summed up.
