Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Russian parliament, also known as the Duma, has expressed its support for the Draft Law (RUU) that guarantees the former president’s immunity from criminal prosecution.
This is a move that is widely believed to benefit current President Vladimir Putin.
Reporting from Euronews, Wednesday (11/18/2020) This bill makes it possible for presidents who are no longer in office and their family members cannot be brought to criminal or administrative responsibility, as well as being detained, arrested, searched, interrogated, or searched.
“The former president’s immunity extends to the residence and office occupied, his vehicle, communications, documents and suitcases, to his correspondence,” the bill added.

In making the Law, after the draft is approved, the Duma will bring the bill to the upper house. Looking at the facts, it is unlikely that there will be disapproval from the upper house, given that Putin controls both of them.
This bill will not come into effect if the president commits “treason or other serious crime, and if this indictment is supported by the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court and supported by two thirds of the State Duma representatives and an equal number of senators from the Federation Council”.
This law is a series of amendments announced last July. Under the amendments, it is possible for Putin to run again as president after his term expires in 2024.
Some analysts claim that this law revives questions about the future president at the helm of Russian politics.
Meanwhile, people’s trust in Putin fell in 2019 after holding above 80% in the five years leading up to this. Opposition parties in Moscow criticized the July amendment that said Putin aims to stay in office for life.
