Vladimir Kara-Murza Sentenced to High-Security Omsk Colony: Concerns for Health and Human Rights

Kara-Murza was convicted in a closed trial in the spring of treason, so-called fake news about the army and participation in the activities of an “undesirable organization”.

“Vladimir Kara-Murza has been taken to Omsk high-security colony IK-6 to serve his sentence,” his lawyer Vadim Prokhorov announced. “He was immediately placed in solitary confinement.”

Omsk is located approximately 2,700 kilometers east of Moscow.

Russia’s penitentiary system often takes weeks to transport inmates to far-flung state prisons, and the whereabouts of a transiting inmate who stops at various prisons along the way is often unknown.

“The whole journey from Moscow to Omsk in the 21st century took no less than three weeks,” Prokhorov said, noting that he was held in solitary confinement in the central city of Samara for several days.

Prokhorov said that placing the 42-year-old Kara-Murza in such cells endangers his fragile health.

Kara-Murza’s lawyers and family have said he is suffering from a nervous disorder resulting from two poisoning attempts.

His sentence is the longest sentence handed down to a member of the Russian opposition in recent years.

He has long called on the West to impose sanctions on Russian officials.
