Jakarta, Selular.ID – Letsgo Digital shows off Vivo’s patented smartphone design that has caught a lot of attention. Vivo filed patents for “camera modules, electronic equipment and camera module control methods” with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO). This 23-page document was released on July 29, 2021. It depicts a Vivo smartphone with an ultra-telephoto pop-up camera.
In this case, the patented new Vivo smartphone can achieve “high zoom function.” The phone has a pop-up camera system, but the camera is not front-facing. Instead, it faces backwards. In other words, the rear camera is inserted into a pop-up system, and the front camera is placed below the screen.
The pop-up camera system has four expandable modules. It is similar to a trapezoidal structure, with the extra lens sliding out each time. The lenses below will always be available, and users can expand the lenses further as needed.
Lenses can partially overlap each other to achieve a larger zoom range. Unfortunately, the document does not specify data for optical zoom.
However, this should be much higher than today’s smartphones with periscope zoom cameras. In short, this smartphone has a larger zoom range through a patented camera system. As is known, Vivo already has several smartphones with good zoom cameras. For example, the Vivo X30 Pro has two telephoto lenses with 5x and 2x zooms that make it possible to capture objects that are quite far away.
It remains unclear how the company will integrate flash. In the concept design, however, a stylized flash ring is placed around the bottom camera lens, to maintain the integrity of the symmetrical design.
Vivo Smartphone with Pop-Up Camera
If the patent is true, Vivo is quite consistent in presenting smartphones with pop up cameras. As is known, Vivo has released several smartphones with pop-up cameras, including Vivo Nex, Vivo V15 Pro and V17 Pro. However, keep in mind that there are fewer smartphones with pop-up cameras these days. Many people believe that the camera under the screen also automatically means the end of the pop-up camera. But through this patent, Vivo wants to show that the pop-up camera can also be used to replace the rear camera.
The current pop up camera trend
As quoted from various sources, the existence of pop-up cameras on smartphones will be eroded by other camera designs. This began to be seen in 2020, where smartphone manufacturers began to rarely issue products with a pop-up front camera system anymore.
Not a single smartphone vendor in Indonesia has released a pop-up camera until April 2020. In fact, the pop-up camera looks futuristic and can be the answer for users who want a large screen without the interference of the front camera.
The pop-up camera design itself was first introduced by Vivo Nex in 2018. Through a pop-up design, the front camera is hidden in a smartphone, and will only appear if the user activates it.
However, if you look at the sales of pop-up smartphones that Vivo has released, Vivo has actually considered what sales of pop-up camera smartphones that are being prepared will look like.
And regarding the design, the pop-up camera offers a number of advantages over the notch and punch hole camera designs. In addition to being able to make the screen completely full, the pop-up camera also provides better personal data security because the camera cannot turn on without us noticing. Despite having a modern feel, the pop up camera has several drawbacks.
The following are the disadvantages of the pop up camera
1.Does not have the ability to be water resistant
This smartphone is vulnerable to water. This is due to the presence of a gap to remove the camera so that water can more easily enter the smartphone.
2.Big damage if shifted
The protrusion of the camera from the smartphone body due to the pop-up feature is likely to break easily, due to the activities of the user.
3. Prone to not being able to go out or enter
The front camera in general does not need an in and out mechanism. In the pop-up, this is required. If there is a problem, the camera may not come out. What’s worse is if the pop-up camera doesn’t want to go back or enter the smartphone.

4. More battery consumption
The process of removing the camera mechanism requires energy and obviously it will eat up battery power. If you often take selfies, there is a possibility that the battery will run out faster.
5. Not suitable in dusty environment
Dust, sand or other small particles can infiltrate the smartphone when removing the pop-up camera. This can interfere with the entire system in your smartphone.
