Vivo Expanding the Market with New Foldable Phones: Mid-Level Positioning and Global Trademark Registration

Market research firm Counterpoint Research previously announced that global foldable mobile phone shipments reached 2.1 million units in the second quarter of 2023, a year-on-year increase of 10%, with the largest market being the Chinese market. Shipments in the second quarter of this year were 1.2 million units, equivalent to 58.6% of the total. Some analysts pointed out that China’s folding machine market is booming, mainly due to the large selection of local folding machines.

The registration of two new trademarks means that there were as many as 18 models of folding machines sold in China in the second quarter of this year, but only 11 of them were launched in overseas markets. Among them, vivo’s folding machines have not been exported at all, but the situation may change in the future. Foreign media recently discovered the trademark registration information for vivo’s two new phones, vivo V Flip and vivo S Flip, on the official website of the European Union Intellectual Property Office.

Mid-level positioning expands the market

Currently, vivo’s folding machines include the book-folding X Fold2 and the clamshell-folding X Flip. Some foreign media estimate that the V Flip and S Flip may be mid-range clamshell folding machines in an attempt to expand the folding machine market. For more diverse consumer groups, the situation is similar to Motorola’s RAZR 40 and RAZR 40 Ultra. As for whether vivo’s trademark registration in Europe means that it plans to sell new phones in markets outside China, it is still too early to say.
