Vivienne Westwood conducted an extraordinary life. His innovation and its impact over the past 60 years they have been immense and will continue to produce effects also in the future.
The designer has never wanted to reveal her illness. His condition had worsened in recent daysbut everyone who was close to her told of a woman who fought to the last.
The fashion rebel’s last words
Volcano of ideas and novelties in life, Vivienne wanted to keep faith with her genius even on her deathbed. Her last words have practically already gone down in history: the designer once again underlined to her loved ones the absolute need to take care of the planet. Westwood would have turned 82 on April 8. Her creations have dressed generations of young rebels like her, witnesses of a fashion revolution with leather and studs, before her, and corsets and panniers, after her.
Westwood is known for dominating the punk scene and for being the “mother” of some of the most beautiful dresses in bridal fashion. For several years, her collection has been designed by her partner Andreas Kronthaler. Also awarded by Queen Elizabeth II of the Order of the British Empire in 1992, the designer was so loved that supermodels of the caliber of Naomi Campbell paraded for her for free.
Condolences to companion (and creative partner) Andreas
“I will continue with Vivienne in my heart,” said Kronthaler, husband and creative partner of the designer. “We worked until the end and she gave me a lot of things to go on with. Thank you darling. The world needs people like Vivienne to change for the better. She who had been the undisputed queen of the punk aesthetic, the last times, she considered herself a Taoist. There has never been a greater need for the Tao than today. The Tao gives you a sense of belonging in the cosmos and brings purpose to your life. It gives you such a sense of identity and strength to know that you are living the life you can live and therefore ought to live: make full use of your character and full use of your life on earth.”
Civil and political commitment
Vivienne has always fought for justice and fairness and worked on a plan to save the world. The rebel designer, despite her 81 years of age, continued to be a political activist until shortly before her death. “Julian Assange – you had recently declared – is a hero and has been treated atrociously by the British government”. Or again: “Capitalism is a crime. It is the main cause of war, climate change and corruption”. The Vivienne Foundation, a non-profit corporation, founded by Westwood in late 2022, with his children and grandson, will be officially launched next year to honor, protect and continue the legacy. of Vivienne’s life, design and activism. The Foundation’s goal is to raise awareness and create tangible change by working with NGOs, building on four pillars: climate change, stop war, defend human rights and protest against capitalism. The Vivienne Foundation exists to create a better world and implement Vivienne’s plans. Her last warning: stop climate change. This is a war for the very existence of the human race. And that of the planet. L The most important weapon we have is public opinion. Become a freedom fighter.”
