The 17.61-carat diamond is one of the ten most expensive ever sold at auction, according to a spokesperson for the auction house.
It was sold for 39.5 million Swiss francs, equivalent to more than NOK 491 million, at a Christie’s auction in Geneva.
Christie’s is one of the world’s leading auction houses.
The diamond is called Bleu Royal, and sits in a ring. Christie’s says it is the largest flawless bright blue diamond ever offered for sale at auction.
The diamond’s estimated value before the auction has ranged between $35 million and $50 million. The diamond itself is 13 millimeters long and eight millimeters wide.
It is not known who sold the diamond, but according to Christie’s it has been part of an “important private collection” for the past 50 years.
