Vivianne Miedema Returns to Football Field After Year-long Injury: Dutch Squad for Nations League Matches with Scotland

Vivianne Miedema is happy that she has made her return to the football field after almost a year of injuries. The Arsenal striker came on as a substitute for the Londoners in the final phase of the 1-2 away match against Bristol City on Sunday.

“I am a full-fledged football player again. The last 310 days have been a physical and emotional rollercoaster,” the Dutch international wrote on Monday. X.

Miedema seriously injured her knee last December during an Arsenal match against Olympique Lyonnais. In the hospital it turned out that her cruciate ligament was torn. As a result, she missed the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand last summer.

“You never know what such a rehabilitation process entails until you go through it yourself,” continues 27-year-old Miedema. “From the initial sadness and anger about the injury to the fear of the surgery and rehabilitation.”

“It was difficult to trust my body again. But after several relapses and revivals, I regained the confidence and desire to make my return to the football field.”

During her recovery period, Miedema learned not to live on autopilot anymore. “If there is one thing I have learned during my rehabilitation, it is to deal with and enjoy milestones and the special moments.”

“I would like to thank all my teammates who supported me in the gym and motivated me during my rehabilitation. I am happy to be back on the field with you. It is as if I have never been away.”

Miedema has been included in the Dutch squad by national coach Andries Jonker for the two Nations League matches against Scotland on October 27 and 31. Jonker previously indicated that there is little chance that the striker will get playing minutes.
