Vivalia computer attack: patient safety and vital services are preserved

The Vivalia crisis unit met this Sunday morning to take stock of the situation after a major computer attack that occurred overnight from Friday to Saturday. 200 servers and 1500 PCs were affected, but patient safety and vital services were fully preserved.

The consequences of this virus have a direct impact on the medical activity of general hospitals. Thus, special measures have been decided for the day of this Monday, May 16:

  • Consultations: a cancellation SMS message will be sent to each person having an appointment. Certain consultations could be maintained according to the assessment of the doctor concerned who will then contact his patient;
  • Operations/surgical interventions: anyone scheduled for tomorrow will be contacted by Vivalia to be informed of whether or not their operation will be maintained. This decision will be taken on a case-by-case basis, depending on the patient’s situation, in consultation between doctors/nurses and the Medical Director;
  • Radiology/scintigraphy: all scheduled examinations are cancelled;
  • Sampling centres: blood samples are maintained;
  • Covid centers: all activity is stopped.
  • All emergency medicine continues to be provided.

For the following days, the medical activity will be reassessed and defined by the Vivalia Crisis Unit according to the evolution of the situation. The crisis unit will meet every morning and urgently, if necessary. Decisions will be made in the interests of patients to ensure the best possible continuity of care.

In terms of the computer attack and its consequences, the teams supported by outside experts identified the source of the intrusion and closed the breach.

At this stage, no “mine” has been discovered. The teams are working to restore the situation in order to restart the IT structure as soon as possible, with the best possible security conditions. This follow-up is established according to a hierarchy determined according to functional priorities (laboratories, radiology, medical records.)

Finally, this morning, the crisis unit wanted to thank and salute the tremendous commitment of all the teams mobilized this weekend, whether they are IT, medical technicians, nurses, administrative. Vivalia also thanks the solidarity shown by other hospitals that have offered their help.
