The forty-nine-year-old Holaň led the hockey player of the first-league Poruba for the last two seasons, this season he has been without engagement so far. However, this is no longer the case, as he returns to Vítkovice, where he started as a player and later as a coach.
Between 2004 and 06, he was on the Vítkovice substitution as an assistant to Vladimír Vůjtek, he started the 2006/07 season as the head coach in the Ostrava team, but was soon replaced by Miroslav Fryčer. Now he is returning to Vítkovice after fourteen long years.

As the head coach, Holaň also led Sparta, Mladá Boleslav and Pardubice in the extra league. He also has extensive foreign experience. He coached Zvolen and Trenčín in Slovakia, Lillehammer in Norway, Feldkirch in Austria, Grodno in Belarus and Barkut Kyiv in Ukraine.

Vítkovice, which ranks ninth in the extra-league table after a series of five losses, is the second club to reach a change of coaches this season. The first was Pardubice, where in November Richard Král replaced the dismissed Milan Razým.
