Vítkovic hockey players won by default the first match of the Champions League round of 16 in Lahti. The duel in Finland was interrupted for almost two hours at 11:02 a.m. due to problems with the ice and then ended. A 3:0 forfeit victory immediately gave Ostravans the lead in the competition.

For both teams, it was the first appearance in the knockout stages of this LM season, after they secured promotion from the regular season.

According to the representatives of the competition, it was not possible to finish the match in the replacement period. The Vítkovič team will thus have a three-goal advantage before the home rematch, which is scheduled for a week in Ostrava.

“According to the sports rules of the CHL (Champions Hockey League), the match can be interrupted by referees for plausible reasons for a maximum of 120 minutes. Since it was not possible to prepare the unfit ice surface for play during this time, the match was canceled and the Lahti Pelicans team was punished with a 0:3 forfeit loss,” explained the decision on the result of the competition management.

Just before the initial throw-in scheduled for 17:30, the referees were already filling smaller holes in the ice with snow. Vítkovic were the more dangerous team in the beginning.

Peter Krieger and Petr Fridrich had very good chances to open the scoring, but Jussi Olkinuora in the home goal, whose line-up included Czech defenders Michal Jordán and Filip Král and striker Luboš Horký, was against it.

Irregularities on the ice

The stoppage at the beginning of the 12th minute occurred after the referees noticed irregularities in several places in the area of the center circle and one of the throw-in circles. It didn’t take long before they sent players from both teams to the booths.

A roller skate went onto the ice, but even after about half an hour of trying to fix it, the referees did not find the playing area fit to continue. In the end, it was decided that the home team would be given an extra hour to make amends. With the help of the roller, ice treatment began in both problem areas.

Meanwhile, the possible continuation of the match has been postponed again. At 19:40, however, the referee, representatives of both teams and LM assessed the quality of the ice as insufficient for the continuation of the match.

Opening match of the eighth finals of the hockey Champions League:

Pelicans Lahti – Vítkovice Ridera 0:3 by default, at 11:02 the match was terminated due to an unsuitable playing surface
