Vitesse suspended youth coach Patrick Ax on Monday. The reason for the dismissal was an incident with a youth player. According to the coach the Gelderlander in Omroep Gelderland threw an object at his player.
It concerns an incident in the dressing room after the match of Vitesse under-18 against Willem II under-18. “In the emotion surrounding the match, an unpleasant incident took place last weekend, in which our youth coach was involved,” a Vitesse spokesperson confirmed to NU.nl on Tuesday.
The Arnhem club has introduced a “cooling off period”. “For the time being, Ax’s tasks will be taken over. A safe environment is above all at Vitesse and within the academy. In the meantime, we will look at how Vitesse and the trainer can continue together. This includes a personal development process,” says the spokesman.
According to Omroep Gelderland in the Gelderlander Ax is said to have thrown a broom or squeegee at a youth player on Saturday. Vitesse does not want to confirm these sounds. “Details are for everyone involved,” the spokesperson said.
Ax responded the Gelderlander on the incident. “I can’t say much else about it,” he said. “But I take full blame. I am the adult and the trainer of the group.”

‘We deeply regret it’
Michael Jansen, interim head of the Vitesse Football Academy, also responded to the incident. “We deeply regret that emotions have run so high that an incident like this has occurred.”
“It also does not fit with the way we want to interact with each other within the Academy,” Jansen continues. “It’s up to us to work together to ensure this doesn’t happen again.”
Ax, 44, has been working in Vitesse’s training for years. The trainer was also active as a player for the Arnhem team. He also played for FC Groningen, De Graafschap, Go Ahead Eagles and NEC. Ax played by far the most matches among the Nijmegen team: 104.
